Feeling Down? Stand back up! Watch This Video

January 13, 2009 by jclements

A very special thank you to Tim Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Workweek, for sharing this video.

Here are his words:

“There are moments when you feel the world is too much. Days and even weeks when you want to (or perhaps do) pull up the covers and half-sleep in bed until nightfall, avoiding a feeling of hopelessness that seems insurmountable. Long-awaited deals fall through without warning, haters attack you without reason or fact, circumstances turn good decisions into awful realities — sometimes it just feels like the deck is stacked against you and there is nothing you can do about it.

I’ve felt the same on more than a few occasions, and more are coming.”

Truth be told, I’ve felt that way many times in my life, too.

And if you or a loved one is battling cancer, that feeling of hopelessness could be 10 x 10 x 10 times worse than anything you could have ever imagined.

But…

…guess what? Lots and lots and lots of people survive cancer: Lance Armstrong, Christina Applegate, Rober DiNiro, Steve Jobs, Sheryl Crow, and many more. And not just famous people win their battle with cancer. Check out Richard Todd’s story at www.cellsforcells.com and how he beat leukemia in 44 days!

Stand back up! Finish strong! Beat Cancer! Win Your Battle! Watch this Video.

Ferrellgas Propane: Showing Kansas City how to give in tough economy

November 19, 2008 by jclements

A couple of weeks ago, I get the following email from Jim, Corporate Communications Manager for Ferrellgas Propane:

“…we’re going to have a cookout tomorrow to benefit Harvesters. It’s from 11:30 to 1 if you want to drop by. Bring a donation of non-perishable food or a small monetary gift and we’ll feed you. I’d love to have you come if you can.”

Jim and Ferrellgas have been huge supporters of Cells for Cells, so it is a very simple decision for me to attend and bring some money to help out. And I like the invitation – just a simple request to help out. That speaks volumes to me.

There was a tent set up in the parking lot of their office complex, the Lighton Plaza; and I could see the bbq smoke from way across the complex. I ate a hamburger and chips and beans. I love grilled hamburgers. (This was the REAL reason why it was easy for me to say yes!)

When I arrived, my very first thought was, “How successful will this cookout be with the economy as it is?”

Well, the results are in and they are impressive:

Jim writes to me, “We ended up with about 350 attendees, $3500.00 raised and what we’ll call a mountain of food collected. Harvesters is going to try to get us a pound total for the food donation, but I think that ‘a mountain’ does it justices.”

Jim told me that Harvesters has 4:1 buying power, meaning that that $3500.00 raised actually will buy $14,000.00 worth of food for Kansas Citians in need.

All I can say is “Job Well Done, Ferrellgas!” Jim, you did an impressive job and many families are going to be helped by your efforts. I know that many other companies and the Lighton Plaza contributed to the success of the cookout – so to everyone else that helped organize and to everyone that gave, thank you for showing Kansas City how to give during these tough times.

Oh, and I did walk away with a new Tshirt from Lighton Plaza. I love Tshirts!

Apple almost has me: Check out Shazam

November 15, 2008 by jclements

As you know, I am a diehard T-Mobile fan and I’ve still got my Moto Razr.

I like the Razr because it is thin. I’ve never liked “bulky” phones like a blackberry or treo. They are just to big for my pocket and I wouldn’t want to carry it on my belt – that is dorky.

I’ve liked thin up until RIGHT NOW…

Apple almost has me. I’ve watched app after app demonstrated by Kevin Rose at his blog like this game called Topple.

After seeing the following commercial, I wanted to go buy an iPhone. This blows me away.

Cells for Cells: Part of Pepsi’s Eco Challenge

November 7, 2008 by jclements

Have you seen Pepsi’s Eco Challenge website?

It begins with “Welcome to the NEW Pepsi Challenge. Many Pepsi fans remember the days of the Pepsi Challenge – when we dared consumers to chose among competing cola brands and trumpeted the fact that our brand consistently came out on top. (My personal favorite is Pepsi Cherry Cola – mmmm.)

The website continues, “Today we heed to a different call and face a different challenge, one that cuts across brands, companies, industries and even continents – the challenge of environmental stewardship, protecting our planet’s resources for the generations to come…”

It is one of the most robust recycling websites I have seen. The Pepsi Eco Challenge website tells the entire story of what Pepsi is doing to reach their environmental goals – from their improving their trucks and buildings to helping college students recycle with the new URecycle program.

And, did you know that Cells for Cells is part of Pepsi’s Eco Challenge:

To navigate to the Cells for Cells section of Pepsi’s Eco Challenge, go to www.pepsiecochallenge.com.

Then, click on the bottom right hand on the PACKAGING link and then, after that page loads, click again on the bottom right hand on the PARTNERSHIP link.

Thank you, Pepsi, for your leadership. Thank you for using our resources efficiently. And, THANK YOU for allowing Cells for Cells to be a part of Pepsi’s Eco Challenge.

By the way, do you remember this classic Pepsi commercial with the Godfather Girl?

Inside info on the HTC G1 and more phones from TMobile

October 22, 2008 by jclements

I have a very good friend, former Cells for Cells HERO and strong supporter of CFC, Jeff Pickerell, who works at T-Mobile in Kansas. He had a very strong recommendation to wait for some new phones from T-Mobile that will be coming out after the HTC G1.

I love T-Mobile and have always been happy with their service and especially their customer service. I was very happy to hear they were finally providing a data plan with 3G.

I currently use the old Moto Razr V3. I love how thin it is. And that really is the only feature that is keeping it in my pocket. I totally want to upgrade – I feel like I am missing the boat as this world moves toward mobility.

I also played with the iPhone for the first time and have been following Kevin Rose on his blog as he samples different apps for the iPhone. (Brilliant marketing by Apple, btw.)

The first “review” I ran into was the following from Gadget Labs at Wired.com. There is some PG language.

This review makes me just a tiny nervous about moving to the G1; but the guys at Gadget Labs seem a tiny bit biased. Hmmm?

So I did a little bit more looking and found a very solid review that compares the G1 to the iPhone. Seth Porges at Popular Mechanics does a great job with the comparison of the two devices.

Thank you, Seth, for some great insight. Now I feel empowered to move away from my ancient Moto Razr into this new world mobility.

/screech to a halt sound / but Jeff tells me to wait. T-Mobile is coming out with “a ton” of new phones with touch screens and 3G and 10MP cameras. So if you love T-Mobile, Google, and Android, you will have some very exciting choices to make in the very near future.

I wonder if we’ll have some phones to recycle after all of these launches.
