Recycling Used Cell Phones: Yes, Even If Your Dog Chewed On It

November 13, 2023 by jclements

Did you know that every single used cell phone, no matter the condition, can be recycled.

Yup, even this cell phone, that was chewed on by a very hungry dog,  can be recycled.

(On a side note:  I always laugh when I see a phone like this come in.  There is probably a really funny story behind it.

So, I looked for a link to a funny dog drool or dog slobber picture; but the search made my stomach queezy and now I can’t un-see those photos.)

Moving on…

Cell phones are the most value-dense electronics commodity on the planet.   Approximately half of all cell phones that Cells for Cells collects end up at Umicore in Belgium.  Umicore is the world’s largest recycler of precious metals from electronic scrap – including mobile phones.  Umicore “is one of the most efficient [recyclers] worldwide and is able to recycle 17 metals, of which seven are precious metals.”

Cells for Cells collects any cell phone, from any carrier, in any condition:

  • Old
  • Used
  • Broken
  • Water-damaged
  • Cracked Screens
  • Replacements
  • Flips
  • MiFi
  • WiFi
  • iPhones
  • Samsung
  • Motorola
  • Bag Phones
  • Any cell phone, even if your dog chewed on it

Join us. Help us. Recycle with us.

If you have old cell phones laying around and want to contribute to this meaningful cause, consider gathering at least 24 phones to make it worthwhile due to shipping costs, which Cells for Cells covers. Join hands with your friends, and together, you can make a positive impact. Learn more about how to donate your old cell phones at Cells for Cells – I WANT TO HELP.

Why You Should Recycle TODAY

November 13, 2023 by admin

In the ever-evolving world of technology, the value of used cell phones is on a constant decline. If your company participates in a cause through cell phone recycling, the urgency of timely recycling cannot be overstated. Let’s explore the dynamics of this market and why you should recycle TODAY.

The Rapid Depreciation

This is the second Blackberry, the RIM Blackberry Inter@ctive Pager 950, released on August 26, 1998

Since the inception of Cells for Cells in 2007, we’ve witnessed a staggering occurrence – the value of certain cell phone models plummeting by more than 90% in less than 30 days. This nosedive typically follows a major carrier discontinuing support for specific models, leaving millions of Americans grappling with diminished device value.

It is estimated that over 5 BILLION cell phones were thrown away in 2022.

Refurbished Phones: A Second Life

For those with cell phone insurance, a common scenario involves receiving a refurbished cell phone after an unfortunate incident like a drop or a dog encounter. (Yes, you can recycle your phone after your dog chews on it.) These refurbished phones often find their origin in recycling programs, such as Cells for Cells. The process involves collecting, wiping memory, repairing, repainting, and reintroducing the device into the market. It’s an environmentally conscious model similar to the lifecycle of used cars.

The Onslaught of New Models

Today’s cell phone market is flooded new devices every few months. With each new introduction, the value of existing models diminishes, creating a cascade effect in the recycling world. As recyclers receive less, they, in turn, contribute less to charitable causes, presenting a challenge for those supporting meaningful causes – like helping families battling cancer!

Taking Action

1. Timely Recycling: The key to combating diminishing values lies in prompt recycling. Whether you support Cells for Cells or another cause, swift recycling ensures the maximum benefit for your charity.

2. Spread Awareness: Educate your co-workers about the importance of timely cell phone recycling. Empower others to contribute to the cause and make a bigger, collective impact.

3. Choose a Responsible Recycler: Opt for recycling programs committed to ethical and sustainable practices. Ensure that your efforts align with environmentally conscious initiatives.

Do More Than Just Recycle

As the landscape of cell phone recycling evolves, your proactive engagement can make a substantial difference. Act today, recycle responsibly, and amplify the impact of your charitable endeavors. Together, we can help even more families battling cancer.

Turning Old Cell Phones into Hope: The Cells for Cells Story

November 3, 2023 by admin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3RoyqVDKFM

The Cell Phone Evolution

Back in the day, cell phones were enormous, almost the size of bricks. Even cordless phones were massive enough to cover half of your head. It was old-school technology that has drastically evolved over the years. But what do you do with those vintage cell phones, or even your perfectly functioning iPhone? We found a local company that can turn them into tools to fight cancer. Let’s take a closer look at the inspiring story of Cells for Cells and how they are turning old cell phones into hope.

The Birth of Cells for Cells

Jason Clements, one of the co-founders of Cells for Cells, was working in telecommunications back in 2007. He noticed that many of his clients faced the same dilemma – they had old cell phones they didn’t know what to do with. It was common knowledge that you shouldn’t throw cell phones in the trash, but few knew of alternative options.

An Environmentalist’s Vision

Jason was also an environmentalist with a strong desire to ensure that old cell phones found new life, both for recycling and to help others in need. The idea was to benefit a cancer charity, inspired by personal experience. Jason had recently witnessed the challenges families face when battling cancer.

A Personal Connection

Just two years prior, Jason’s own grandfather received a cancer diagnosis, which took everyone by surprise. Within a few months, he was gone, leaving the family grappling with the harsh realities of cancer. This personal experience drove Jason’s determination to make a difference.

Partnering with Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

To bring his vision to life, Jason partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Together, they began collecting old cell phones, aiming to provide financial support to families dealing with the financial burdens of cancer.

Small Beginnings, Big Impact

The journey started modestly, with Jason running Cells for Cells from his own garage. Over time, it grew significantly, and today, it boasts partnerships with hundreds of businesses across the country. The money raised has gone directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Patient Aid Fund, which offers much-needed financial assistance to families in need.

In the last few years, Cells for Cells has used the social media sites Go Fund Me and Give Send Go to help even more families directly – Like the Herbert Family (read their story here).

Making a Difference, One Cell Phone at a Time

Jason reflects on the rewarding aspect of his journey, saying, “It’s super rewarding to know that this little thing that happens in my garage with cell phones is helping somebody that’s having a really rough time right now.”
